Outreach Committee

“And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.” ~ Titus 3:14

The mission of Newtonbrook’s Outreach Committee is: With God's help we work together to make our world a better place.

The Outreach Committee is one of the largest at Newtonbrook with a wide range of responsibilities, activities and supportive actions. These responsibilities include:

Communication
Newtonbrook's Quarterly Newsletter
Newtonbrook United Church publishes a variety of communications both on paper and electronically, including “Newtonbrook News”, a newsletter which is published quarterly, and the web site, which is maintained on an ongoing basis.

In addition, all interested households may receive a subscription to The Observer, the United Church's national magazine, at a cost of $14 annually if subscribed through the church. A member of the Outreach Committee has the responsibility for promoting The Observer and gathering the yearly subscription fees. Please see our links page to access the magazine’s web page directly.

Community, National and World Outreach
Refugees
Don Valley Refugee Resettlers (DVRR)
This is a group made up of representatives of eight United Churches in Toronto Don Valley Presbytery: Forest Grove, Hillcrest, Lansing, Newtonbrook, Northminster, Oriole York Mills, Taiwanese and Willowdale. Since its formation in 1994, the group has sponsored 22 refugees, providing both financial and moral support to each family. Recent activity has included resettling a family of nine from Afghanistan and a family of three from Somalia. The group relies financially on contributions from the eight churches forming the group, private donations, and on fundraising efforts. Members also participate in activities such as assisting with apartment hunting/furnishing, and helping with educational and medical arrangements. Donations can be made to the Don Valley Refugee Resettlers through any of the eight participating churches. A charitable tax receipt can be issued if cheques are made payable to the church through which the donation is being made, noting on the cheque that the funds are for the DVRR. If you are interested in volunteering time or donating resources to DVRR, please contact the Newtonbrook church office for more information.

Global Issues
This very active team provides opportunities for the congregation to explore issues of injustice, poverty, environmental issues and exploitation locally, nationally and throughout the world. The Team encourages the congregation to take effective faith-based action through letter writing, petitions, e-mails to our representatives at all levels of government and, where possible also to governments of other countries. In our commitment to global justice, we sell a number of Fair Trade products and serve Fair Trade coffee at the Fellowship Time after the Sunday Worship service. In our commitment to environmental issues, we continue to encourage the use of vegetarian and locally grown foods in church activities

Wednesday Drop Inn

Inclusiveness
At Newtonbrook United Church all people are welcome into the church and our programs, regardless of race, creed, colour, age, gender, disability, country of origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. Newtonbrook is an inclusive congregation and part of our ministry is to reach out to minority groups within the community. For 6 years, the current chair of NUC’s Outreach Committee was on the national executive board of Affirm United, the United Church’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) support network and continues to minister through local support and liaison with the GLBT community.

This group is concerned about violence against women, specifically aiding the women and children of the North York Women's Shelter through donations of specially made-up baskets. These baskets contain personal and household supplies, linens and clothing needed to get started in a new home. This group also organizes events to inform and educate members of the congregation about the difficulties faced by women—and their children—when they are forced to flee the family home because of domestic violence. Please see the calendar for when the next event is scheduled.
