14th Willowdale Scout Group
14th Willowdale Beavers/Cubs/Scouts
2008 was the 100th anniversary of the Scouting movement and the 44th year of Newtonbrook’s Scouting group, the 14th Willowdale. The group decided to build "The Meeting Place" - four park benches around a brick square on the south lawn of the church - as our Centennial Project and as a way to show appreciation to Newtonbrook United Church, who has supported the group for so long.

"The Meeting Place" is available for any community of the church or local neighbourhood to use. Even the Beavers had a hand in assembling the benches; as well many of our current and past members signed one of the bricks and then laid it themselves. A logbook is kept with each person's brick location as their link with Scouting for the next 100 years! If you were missed, let us know and a record will be made in the logbook.

The Cub section is at the maxiumum 25 and has enjoyed a varied program including overnights at Ontario Science Centre or Woodland Trails as well as visits to the ROM, Kelso Conservation and biking at Taylor Creek. 2009 will be spent helping the children earn their Tawny Star (creative expression) and Red Star (health and fitness).

The Beavers have a small group of 6 participants and thus would welcome any boys or girls ages 5-7 for a great program on Tuesday evenings. Events such as skating at City Hall, Beaver buggy construction and races, church hall sleepover, Operation Snowman, and a weekend camp in May are all part of the program.

14th Willowdale Scouting Group Awards
Our Scouts and Venturers continue to enjoy their weekly meetings at NUC to plan their various outdoor activities, including 3 weekend camps, Fort George Camp, summer canoe trips, Paddle the Don, and a week at the Haliburton Scout Reserve. For 9 years, the 14th Willowdale has won the Haliburton Regatta Tournament demonstrating that our Scouts and Venturers know how to swim, paddle, and act as a team in the various water sports/safety exercises. Along with all these fun events, they earn various badges, including four who have earned thier Chief Scout Award.
Community Service activities include delivering Star Santa Claus packages to needy families in the neighbourhood as well as staffing 3 portages to help inexperienced paddlers get their canoes through the Paddle the Don Event. Support was also provided to Newtonbrook’s Food and Mitten Drive at Christmas and planting a number of trees in the East Donlands Park.
Baden Powell Sunday circa 2000
In 2007, one of our Scouts, Evan Salmon received the Medal for Meritorious Conduct from the Governor General of Canada in the Senate Chambers in Ottawa. This was due to his first aid of his father in a serious trail biking accident, as well as how he assisted the EMS in locating the scene of the accident.
