Library
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” ~ Charles W. Eliot
Come visit Newtonbrook United Church’s library located at the east end of the Fellowship Room. The Library’s intent is to widen the congregation’s horizons while engaging in a bit of fun.
While the Library has some books found in the Public Library, a wide range of spiritual subject matter, both contemporary and traditional, as well as some fiction can be found. All books are catalogued according to their Dewey numbers; the same system used in Public Libraries.
Books on display are regularly updated to reflect current events, seasons or themes. You can also check out the current
newsletter for new recommended reading or the
Reading Group if you are interested in joining Newtonbrook’s book club. Our library currently has a wonderful selection of Advent and Christmas books - be sure to check out the display in the Fellowship Room.
Services recorded on audio cassette tapes as well as a small selection of VHS biblical tapes are available from the church library.
A tiny sample of our collection includes:
• “The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Toronto” by Adrienne Shadd, Afua Cooper and Karolyn Smardz Frost. It highlights largely unknown contributions by African Canadians to the social and cultural life of Toronto in the 1800s.
• “How to be a Perfect Stranger” by Stuart Matlins. Covering many faith groups in North America, these books (2 volumes) include a brief history, and outline of common ceremonies and suggestions for appropriate clothing and behaviour.
• “Little by Little” by Jean Little is an autobiography of the acclaimed children’s author, who was a child of missionary parents in Taiwan.
• Lift your heart and spirits with “Radical Gratitude” by Mary Jo Leddy, a Catholic theologian, who teaches at Regis College, U of T, and lives at Romero House, a centre to support refugees.
• “Worship for All Ages” by Ian Macdonald, Barb Tunnicliffe, and Marilyn Perry contains a series of services for special Sundays that is easy to read and use, and can be applied to worship experiences other than Sundays.
The children's library has moved upstairs to two shelves by the cupboard in the library, in the Fellowship Room - great books for grandparents and parents to share! There is a great selection of children’s Bible stories and other children’s favourites, as well as Christmas books for children.
“Lord! When you sell … a book you don't sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue - you sell … a whole new life. Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night - there's all heaven and earth in a book, a real book.” ~ Christopher Morley
